What Does Elizabeth City Mean To Me?

Posted on 12/03/2020 by Jared A. Turner

Community is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Elizabeth City. The warm Southern welcome you get when taking aimlessly morning or afternoon walks downtown by the waterfront, which is one of the towns largest attractions. The small mom and pop shops and restaurants. You can’t beat originality.

Sitting at the local coffeeshop (Muddy Water’s) daily is how I built a lot of my personal and professional relationships. Nothing like a frappe or regular coffee to bring people together to tell a story. My personal favorite is the Train Wreck Frappe. You won’t be disappointed. Oh! and did I mention they have wine and beer now?? Come close let me you tell you a secret…...I heard they do collaborations with Ghost Harbor sometimes (winky face emoji).man sitting at coffeeshop smiling and using computer

What Can I Do for Lunch?

You can’t have coffee on an empty stomach lol! I like to stop in the The Market for lunch. It’s one of my favorite lunch spots downtown. I’m a sucker for their grab-and-go breakfast and lunch boxes. And their desserts are to die for! Just saying haha! and you can’t beat the location right by the waterfront

Evening walks to popular dinner spots are a regular thing in Elizabeth City. You can find me at Hoppin' Johnz. It’s just the twist the downtown area needed. Gathering at this lively place for dinner with friends, colleagues, and family are one of my favorite things to do. Seems that I always lean towards getting the shrimp and grits. It comes with biscuits and apple butter too!

Night Life! Got Plans After Dinner?

Ghost Harbor Brewery was brought to our city about three years ago and wow! it has done amazing. It’s the perfect hangout spot after dinner for a nice cold one. You may even catch a night where they have a live band playing in the Alley and people tearing up the dance floor. Perfect for the entire family. Yes, even the four-legged ones! :)

Every first Friday of the month is Art Walk. A lot of the local artist feature their work in various downtown businesses. It’s a good way to mingle with the community and pick up some amazing art pieces. Arts of the Albemarle is one of the main attractions. They house many pieces created by local artist. I love seeing the paintings of the harbor. I may have a few myself.

Being that I grew up here I kind of thought I would want to leave the area after finishing high school. As you can see, I’m still here. Even through college. Deciding to stay here in Elizabeth City was a good decision for me. I really enjoy the welcoming community and the many things this hidden gem offers. Stop by and say hi if you’re ever in the area.
