Newbold-White House – Quaker home

Attend a Friends Meeting

The first religious service on record in North Carolina was a Quaker meeting held in 1672 by William Edmundson in what is now Hertford, approximately twelve miles from Up River. Later that year, Edmundson was joined by George Fox to hold additional meetings among the settlers of the Albemarle area. Soon the Society of Friends became the dominant religious group in the colony. However, because of their concern over slavery, many Friends migrated to Free states. By the Civil War, the only remaining Friends meeting in the area was Piney Woods, which was established in 1794. Visitors can join one of two active Quaker services on Sunday at 11:00.

Walk through Historic Hertford. Incorporated in 1758, this historic town is home to waterfront homes, parks, antique galleries, gift shops, and cafes.

Visit Jim Catfish Hunter Museum

Located in the Chamber building, the museum showcases Hertford’s favorite son and National Baseball Hall of Famer Jim “Catfish” Hunter. Memorabilia from his days at Perquimans High School, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics, the New York Yankees, and his Hall of Fame induction are on display. Free admission, but donations welcomed.
