This is the site of North Carolina’s first Colonial capital. Take a self-guided walking tour of the historic district, where you can visit the 1758 Cupola House, the 1767 restored Chowan County Courthouse, the 1800/1827 Iredell House, St. Pauls’ Church and the Barker House. Follow the trail of Harriet Ann Jacobs, an Edenton slave whose escape to freedom was documented in her autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, self-published in 1861. A self-guided tour points you to sites referenced in her book.
