Heritage Crafts a Hallmark of Albemarle Craftsman’s Fair

Don’t let the name mislead; you won’t find pom-pom pets or Popsicle houses at this show. Craftsmen from North Carolina and Virginia will bring their tools, knowledge and wares to showcase traditional heritage crafts expertly designed and lovingly made by first-class artisans.
The 59th Annual Albemarle Craftsman’s Fair Oct. 27-29 will be held at the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center in Elizabeth City, N.C. Sponsored by the Albemarle Craftsman’s Guild, the fair features artisans who demonstrate and sell traditional crafts that range from quilting and fiber arts to pottery, jewelry and woodwork.

During the fall not only do our leaves explode with color, but also our Downtown and Main St. will be filled with colors of beautiful artwork. From Oct. 30 until Nov. 4 artists from near and far will share their talents during Splash, a creative event hosted by Arts of the Albemarle.

Donna is definitely one of my top sellers because she’s versatile,” says Mary Temple, owner of the Museum Gift Shop at Museum of the Albemarle. “Customers love her one-of-a-kind designs.” The Elizabeth City-based jewelry designer, who is an active member of the Pocosin Arts Metals Guild and a juried member of the Albemarle Craftsman’s Guild, has been interested in jewelry making since she was a young girl weaving Indian bead rings and bracelets and stringing her grandmother’s endless supply of buttons into simple necklaces.

Meet Alexis Joyner: Elizabeth City’s Sculptor Extraordinaire

When you look at Alexis Joyner’s sculptures, it becomes obvious that familial relationships are at the core of his work. “I find myself drawn to the special bond between mother and child,” Joyner notes. “I often address social issues and concerns and I like to gently remind young folk that they don’t need to reinvent the wheel.”

Anyone walking through Main Street can tell that Elizabeth City is home to talented artisans. The town hosts different art-inspired events, from craft fairs to art classes. One such event is Splash, hosted by Arts of the Albemarle from Oct. 30 until Nov. 5.

Singer, songwriter and cellist Shana Tucker defies being categorized. She describes her musical style–a mix of jazz, funk, classical and R & B–as ChamberSoul. Compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Diana Krall, Tucker will perform at Arts of the Albemarle’s Maguire Theater on Friday, April 29 at 7:30.

SPLASH into EC’s Art Scene, Nov. 2-7

Elizabeth City is becoming quite the arts destination. Arts of the Albemarle’s second SPLASH week of 2015 takes place Nov. 2-7, with artists from all over coming to town to teach classes, lecture or just plein air paint our local scenery. What is SPLASH? It’s a week-long gathering of artists, both local and far-flung, to collaborate, share and enjoy spontaneous creativity.

Over 50 craft categories will be represented, including leatherwork, painted gourds, pottery, jewelry, fiber art, papercraft, glass art, fishing rods, lures, metal work, wood working, dolls, basketry and so much more.
