1. Museum of the Albemarle
looking at artifacts in museum of the albemarleA must-see for any Elizabeth City visitor, the Museum of the Albemarle enables visitors to experience the general history of northeastern North Carolina. Experience a chronological view of the region through the installations that tell a multifaceted, sometimes troubling, and inspirational dramas of colonists, indigenous peoples, and enslaved Africans. 

Price: FREE, while some special exhibits and programs have a charge. Donations appreciated.

 

2. Port Discover

With the Discovery Zone 3-D Printer classroom, the Forces, Fun and Flight Exhibit, and more there are truly endless ways to discover at this center for Hands-on science.

Price: $5 for the first child, $2 per additional child.

 

3. Splash Pad at Enfield Recreation Area

Grab a table, bring a picnic and enjoy a day watching the children having fun. Your older kids will love the tennis courts, basketball courts, baseballs fields, and especially the Skateboard Park! 4. State and Local Parks

At Charles Creek Park you can try your hand at fishing, outdoor games, hiking trails, and volleyball all while enjoying the waterfront. Hollowell Wetlands Trail offers great opportunities for bird watching with its gazebos and benches. 5. Elizabeth City Aviation Trail
Elizabeth City Aviation Trail historic first flightTo visit the areas where the Wright Brothers shopped, stayed and made friends while in Elizabeth City during their time making history by launching the first controlled powered airplane at Kitty Hawk, take the Elizabeth City Aviation Trail. 6. Farm Fresh and Family-Friendly Downtown Waterfront Market

You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables all while experiencing local flavor and learning about how the food is grown.

7. Civil War Markers Tour 
Civil War black and white artAs part of the National Civil War Trails program, the self-guided Civil War Markers Tour weaves together the history of Union occupation in Elizabeth City through real-life accounts of warfare and a tragic tale of a family murdered during their visit to town. You will follow six markers within walking distance of the downtown area that depict the events that took place between 1862 and 1863. Download the tour brochure here!

8. Fun Junktion Park

It features an excellent playground complete with giant chimes and mallets, sandboxes, a splash pad, glide swings, zip line, a skateboard park and more. Plus, you can enjoy the two man-made ponds stocked for catch & release fishing while the kids play!

9. Meads Pool

The pool features three diving boards and three waterslides to enjoy. It is open for the season starting on June 8 and is open daily, Monday through Friday from 12pm – 7pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm – 7pm.

10. Historic Architecture Walking Tours

Download the tour brochure to learn plenty about architecture while history comes alive through its many stories. Meanwhile, the Main Street Commercial District Tour will take you down two distinct districts downtown: the manufacturing and shipping area near harbor, and the retail and banking zone near main street. The tour brochure provides details on everything from courthouses to arcades!
