Elizabeth City State University can proudly count its origins to 1891 when Hugh Cale, an African-American representative in the N.C. General Assembly from Pasquotank County, sponsored a bill to establish a teaching school. The bill passed and the "Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School" was created.
As part of the celebration and installation of new Chancellor Dr. Karrie G. Dixon, Elizabeth City State University is inviting the whole community to join us for a free lecture about Elizabeth City State University's history in the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center.
If you'd like to read more about ECSU's history, please see ECSU's website. There is also a self-guided historic walking tour of ECSU.
